Making Environmental News: The BP Deep Water Horizon Disaster
Students in grades 7-11 are invited to apply to RPI EcoEd’s upcoming workshop focused on critical media literacy and the B.P. Deepwater Horizon disaster. Students will work in groups to produce a news broadcast about the Deepwater Horizon disaster. Reporting from differing perspectives, each group will draw on news accounts, government reports, academic publications and press conferences to script their broadcasts. The scripts will then be filmed and presented to the workshop group. Afterwards, students will discuss elements of bias in each broadcast, and the importance of media literacy when addressing environmental issues. Students will learn the basics of critical media literacy, and how environmental and media issues often entangle. No prior knowledge of the Deepwater Horizon disaster is expected.
Students who complete this workshop will be able to:
- Recount the events of the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
- Recognize the role of many stakeholders in causing the spill
- Recognize the role of the Obama administration, BP, scientists, and NGOs in responding to the spill
- Define bias and discuss the social, political, and economic factors that produce it
