Countries Around the World: Environmental Problems and Solutions

Students in grades 4-6 are invited to apply to RPI EcoEd’s Spring 2015 Upper Elementary Research Program. This year’s program will focus on countries around the world, exploring their natural resources and habitats, the people who live there, and how they work to take care of their water, air and land.

Working with an RPI student mentor, each upper elementary student will select a country to focus on, then move through a structured process to develop a research report (5-10 pages), poster and oral presentation. Students will learn to identify, collect, organize, analyze, and present research resources, and will gain experience working cooperatively in a research group. Oral presentations will be delivered at a symposium at RPI on Sunday, April 26.

Students will have reading and writing homework, and will be expected to meet deadlines.

The program is free, but space is very limited. A recommendation from a teacher is required. Applications (including teacher recommendation) are due February 4. Applicants will be informed of their acceptance by February 11.

Each application must include the following 1) an application form (including contact information for a teacher who can provide a recommendation) 2) four brief (100 word) essay answers to the questions provided. The application cover page should be submitted sufficiently in advance of the February 4 deadline to allow time for the designated teacher to submit a recommendation. Once the application form is submitted, the teacher will receive a recommendation request through email. All application materials must be submitted by the February 4 deadline.
